James T. Reber began the Acme Motor Car Company in 1903 in Reading, Pennsylvania. The company built cars under the Selden Patent. The chief engineer at Acme was Victor Jakob who had previously worked in Germany at Daimler. The Acme company went through several ownership changes and in 1911 it became part of the SGV Company.
