1915 Cadillac Model 51 Landaulette
57,200.00 USD
Offered For Sale at the: RM Auction - Vintage Motor Cars at Meadow Brook Hall August 6, 2005, Auburn Hills, Michigan RM Auctions One Classic Car Drive Blenheim, Ontario N0P 1A0 Canada Phone: 519-352-4575 Website: www.rmauctions.com 1915 Cadillac Model 51 Landaulette LOT: 113 Estimate: $60,000-$80,000 US Chassis No. A16258 AUCTION RESULTS: Lot was Sold at a price of $57,200 70bhp 314 cu. in. non-detachable heads V8 engine with float feed carburetor, auxiliary air control, three-speed selective sliding gear transmission, front and rear semi-elliptic leaf springs, floating rear axle and rear-wheel mechanical brakes. Wheelbase: 145" The elegance and innocence of the Edwardian era was quickly coming to a close, yet these changing times coincided with the three passenger Landaulette’s peak of sophistication and style. The “Landaulette” model designation in 1915 would be the last for Cadillac, but the stylish transformable coupe would go out in fashion as one of the new Model 51 models. Although bearing coachwork similar to the previous year, it was Cadillac’s first V8 that made the Model 51 a legend. Although not the first V8 ever built, it was the first to be produced in significant numbers and became a Cadillac trademark for decades. The industry had heard rumors of Cadillac’s 70bhp 314 cubic inch V8 and soon responded with skepticism. In response Cadillac had its advertising agency create an ad that became almost as legendary as the V8 engine itself. The ad was bannered with, “The Penalty of Leadership.” It was very appropriate considering the slanderous statements of detractors – not to mention the world situation in 1915. The advertisement concluded with, “That which is good or makes itself known, no matter how loud the clamor of denial. That which deserves to live - lives.” And indeed, Cadillac would live! Among engineers Cadillac’s V8 was seen as a marvel. W. R. Strictland, chief engineer of Peerless, later would write, “The Cadillac set the pace…. The many advantages of the eight led to a complete change of thought.” The Model 51 Cadillac’s knew was equipped with a competent new chassis and electric self-start making it even more compliant with the growing demand for new technology. Capable of speeds in excess of 65mph here was a car equal to whatever Europe, or anyone else could offer. It was truly another “standard of the world.” The Model 51 Landaulette offered here is a handsome, elegantly restored car that is offered from a private East Coast collection of important early motor cars. It displays a correct restoration on what was a very complete and original example prior to the complete rebuild. In fact, photographs of the car when it was discovered show that though the Cadillac was in somewhat deteriorated condition, it was very complete and even retained the original wood artillery wheels and wood top bows as well as all of its transformable coupe bodywork. Today, the Cadillac is finished in a wonderful two-tone black and dark blue paint scheme reminiscent of the period. The headlamps and sidelamps are correctly painted black with nickel trim, foreshadowing the end of the Brass Era automobile. The interior is lavishly appointed with buttoned black leather, a full complement of gauges including a Warner speedometer and Cadillac clock, while the two piece headliner is finished in a medium gray cloth. Notably, the interior is also quite spacious and allows for more than ample room for two large adults. On a recent road test the Cadillac performed well and offered a pleasant ride, shifting and accelerating as expected. What is unique about this example though is its rare and desirable body, as it offers its owners the ability to tour in today’s popular Brass Era events in both open and closed configurations. With an available 70 horsepower, this is a rare combination. Undoubtedly, one of only a handful in existence, this well restored Model 51 Cadillac represents an important example of the past and future of the automobile combining the elegance of the forthcoming classic era with the exciting technological advances of the Brass Era. This is an important car that one can only admire in person to truly appreciate its physical stature and historical importance.
