1934 Plymouth PE Convertible Coupe

1934 Plymouth PE Convertible Coupe
51,700.00 USD
Offered For Sale at the: RM Auction - Vintage Motor Cars at Meadow Brook Hall August 6, 2005, Auburn Hills, Michigan RM Auctions One Classic Car Drive Blenheim, Ontario N0P 1A0 Canada Phone: 519-352-4575 Website: www.rmauctions.com 1934 Plymouth PE Convertible Coupe LOT: 070 Estimate: $30,000-$40,000 US Chassis No. 2282832 AUCTION RESULTS: Lot was Sold at a price of $51,700 77bhp 201.3 cu. in. inline, four-main bearing six-cylinder engine with Carter B&B C6B carburetors, threespeed sliding gear transmission with free-wheeling, independent coil spring front suspension and Lockheed hydraulic four-wheel brakes. Wheelbase: 114" Plymouth was third in sales in 1934 with 225,817 units. This year also marked the building of the one millionth Plymouth model since it was introduced by Chrysler Corporation just six years earlier. Freshly restyled, the 1934 Plymouth was not only good looking, it also came with increased standard equipment. Its industry first in class independent coil spring front suspension combined with its longer 114 inch wheelbase to give it a smoother ride than much of the competition. Its radiator cap now sat under the hood, while it retained its traditional full-rigged ship hood ornament. The Plymouth hood not only featured the traditional louvers, but there were also twinopening ventilated doors on either side. The more powerful 77bhp 201.3 cubic inch in-line Six provided the 1934 Plymouth with plenty of performance. A 1934 Plymouth proved its speed and reliability by winning the 400 mile Durban to Johannesburg endurance race in South Africa and setting a new course record. In 1934 the most appealing Plymouth in the line-up was the convertible coupe. This pristine convertible coupe example is painted in a striking deep red with black fenders. It has a beige canvas top with a complementary beige pinstripe on its beltline. As well as seating for two up front, a rumbleseat turns this into a true four seater on family occasions. With the top folded into place behind the seat, the windscreen can also be folded for true “sporty” driving on a hot summer’s night. Stylish in its own right, the twin chrome horns, dual side mounted tires with mirrors, trunk rack and trunk, and wide whitewall tires mounted on steel artillery wheels with hubcaps, all contribute to an overall air of adventure in the Clark Gable and Carole Lombard fashion. This Plymouth was a showpiece of the Towe Auto Museum in Sacramento, California. The Plymouth had been restored some time ago, it remained in excellent care at the Towe Auto Museum and today shows very nicely. An easy to operate three-speed sliding gear transmission with free-wheeling and Lockheed Hydraulic four-wheel brakes provide safe and enjoyable cruising. The fun to drive Plymouth PE Convertible Coupe cost a hefty $685 in 1934. Only 4,482 were built and today very few are known to survive.

1934 Pierce-Arrow Model 840-A Silver Arrow

1934 Pierce-Arrow Model 840-A Silver Arrow
120,000.00 USD
Offered For Sale at the: RM Auction - Vintage Motor Cars at Meadow Brook Hall August 6, 2005, Auburn Hills, Michigan RM Auctions One Classic Car Drive Blenheim, Ontario N0P 1A0 Canada Phone: 519-352-4575 Website: www.rmauctions.com 1934 Pierce-Arrow Model 840-A Silver Arrow LOT: 098 Estimate: $140,000-$180,000 US Chassis No. 2580180 AUCTION RESULTS: Lot was Not Sold at a high bid of $120,000 140hp 385 cu. in. straight eight-cylinder engine, three-speed manual transmission, I-beam axle front and hypoid leaf sprung rear suspension and four-wheel drum brakes. Wheelbase: 144" Few marques have developed the legendary reputation of the Pierce-Arrow. Once the leading fine car maker, Pierce-Arrow’s name was built by the exquisitely engineered and massive sixes of the teens. Starting with the Great Arrow and continuing with the Models 36, 48, and ending with the thundering Model 66 – a massive machine with an 847 cu. in. T-head engine and a 147 inch wheelbase – it is easy to see why these early Piece-Arrows were very impressive. The company was born in the early years of the 20th century as an adjunct to a successful bicycle company founded by George N. Pierce. Before long, the company’s reputation for quality had earned it a place amongst America’s automotive elite, alongside the other two members of the “three Ps” of fine cars, Packard and Peerless. By the late 1920s though Pierce-Arrow was in trouble. The manufacturer had been at the top for so long that a stifling conservatism had permeated the company’s operations, as well as its products. In the meantime other marques continued to develop and enhance their products, stealing market share from Pierce-Arrow until the company was awash in red ink. As a result, the very existence of the stunning Silver Arrow offered here can be credited to a remarkable accountant, Mr. Albert R. Erskine. Having ascended to the Presidency of Studebaker, he focused on assembling an automotive empire. He needed a car to compete in the fine car marketplace, and there was no better name than Pierce-Arrow. Erskine saw the value in the name, and quickly negotiated a stock swap deal that gave him control of Pierce-Arrow in 1928. He immediately introduced an eight-cylinder engine, along with new bodies and a host of new features. Better cars with lower prices combined to give Pierce its best year ever in 1929, with 9,700 cars delivered. 1930 dawned with little effect on the company. Most models were unchanged from 1929, and the sales growth continued, with first quarter results up handsomely over the same period in 1929. No one suspected that disaster lay just around the corner. Sales in the fine car market continued to decline, even as Pierce-Arrow and the others introduced a vast array of new products. For 1933, talented designer Phil Wright was instructed by Roy Faulkner, Pierce-Arrow’s new sales manager, to come up with something new and dramatic. Introduced at the 1933 Auto Shows in New York and Chicago, the Silver Arrow was a sensation. Unfortunately, at $10,000 each, the prototype Silver Arrows found few takers, and just five were built. For 1934, however, a very similar car joined the regular product line. Available in both Eight and Salon Twelve versions, it helped drive showroom traffic and lead a dramatic, if short lived, turnaround in sales for Pierce-Arrow. With the bankruptcy of parent company Studebaker in early 1933, and a crippling strike at the end of the year, Pierce-Arrow suffered injuries from which it would never recover. Nonetheless, these grand Silver Arrow coupes provide a glimpse of what might have been. The handsome Pierce Silver Arrow we have the pleasure of offering here has benefited from a comprehensive body-off restoration with photos taken throughout the process that will accompany the car in its sale. Though executed some time ago, the overall cosmetic condition has held up quite well and the paintwork is very presentable as is the brightwork and interior. Finished in a soft Dove gray with slightly darker gray trim it is accented with red wheels and inside upholstery is gray broadcloth with black piping. Overall, the subtle colors delicately enhance the dramatic lines of the Pierce and the car is even more impressive in person. The restoration appears to have been exacted with special attention paid to duplicating the Silver Arrow’s original presentation. The gauges and dashboard appear to be in very proper fully restored condition. The odometer shows a mileage just under 45,000 miles, which may be from new, although cannot be fully verified. The straight eight motor, which provides ample power, is tidy and in nicely detailed condition. The vendor reports the Pierce is a strong running car; however, a thorough service is always recommended before any touring. With only a handful of survivors known, this Pierce Silver Arrow offers the astute collector an opportunity to add not only one of the most impressive looking, but also among the rarest examples of this famous Buffalo-built classic car to their collection.
