GM crate engine fitted, (with the 290bhp 283 cu. in. Rochester mechanical fuel-injected V8 original engine included) four-speed manual transmission, front independent suspension with A-arms, coil springs and a rigid rear axle and four-wheel drum brakes. Wheelbase: 102" Over the years, Chevrolet has created a reputation in the automotive industry as a leader in engineering, innovation and dependability. During the 1950s, Chevrolet began experimenting with the idea of building a completely new series of automobiles to compete in an aggressive arena dominated mostly by foreign performance vehicles. Little did the company realize then that the automobile they had envisioned would eventually upset their highly acclaimed adversaries. Chevrolet unveiled the Corvette at New York’s Waldorf - Astoria Hotel in 1953 as merely a show car, but owing to interest from both within the company and from the public the concept vehicle became a reality. Not wanting to waste time and money with dies for a metal body, the two seater was made from fiberglass and powered by the Blue Flame six-cylinder. Although impressive to look at, the Corvette fought financially to stay alive while having its fair share of difficulty on the track competing against thoroughbreds like Ferrari and Mercedes. Over the next few years, though, as its design and engineering evolved, the Corvette would prove successful as it laid claim to the title of America’s sports car. With Zora Arkus-Duntov’s arrival in 1957, the personality of Chevrolet’s sports car changed dramatically. A new focus on performance resulted in higher horsepower engines and improved handling. With the advent of the 283 cu. in. version of Chevy’s lightweight and durable small-block engine in 1957 the Corvette, under Duntov’s guidance, finally fulfilled its promise as a true American sports car. In 1958 General Motors found itself looking to improve on an already successful venture. However, the 1957 Corvettes had hit the mark in many ways, and most changes adopted with the 1958 models were reflective of the styling excesses of the surrounding automotive industry. The 1958 Corvettes found themselves loaded in chrome and amenities as well as styling touches both inside and outside the car. Corvettes were offered with a choice of four different engines ranging from a 245bhp engine to the 290bhp fuel-injected model. The 1958 Corvette presented here was a participant in the Great Race 2004 as number 94. Still in race attire, it is fitted with official race decals, and as per regulation, an official Great Race compliant speedometer, as well as an aftermarket oil temperature and water temperature gauge. The Great Race is America’s longest running vintage automobile rally. More than 100 vehicles, 45 years or older, participate in this challenging time-speed-distance rally. These street legal vintage cars must travel 170 to 480 miles each day on a specific route, taking them across some of America’s most dynamic back roads from Jacksonville, Florida to Monterey, California. One point is scored for every second a racer is off a specific time checkpoint, and as in golf, the lowest score wins. To elevate the challenge, participants may only use an analog clock, wristwatch, regulation speedometer and pencil and paper to chart their miles and progress. In preparation for the race the Corvette’s original fuel-injected engine was replaced with a GM 350 cubic inch carbureted crate engine. This was done to minimize wear and mileage on the original engine and to guarantee reliability throughout the race. The replacement engine is still mounted in the vehicle with the original fuel-injected engine included in the sale of the car. The white and blue/gray paint is in very fine condition as is the chrome and interior. The odometer reads 59,000 miles but is shared between the original and aftermarket engine. A welcome entry into any future Great Races, or for weekend fun, this Corvette is ready to be driven.
