1942 Cadillac Series 62 Convertible Coupe
LOT: 042
Chassis No. 5426611
Sold at a price of $36,300

150hp 346 cu. in. L-head Eight with three main bearings, eight-cylinder engine, four-bbl carburetor, Twin-Turbine Variable Pitch DynaFlow automatic transmission, four-wheel leaf springs and four-wheel drum brakes. Wheelbase: 129"

The 1942 40th Anniversary Cadillac models were very dramatically restyled. The Harley Earl 1941 models had been runaway best sellers in their field, yet the improvements were substantial. The grille had more massive bars but fewer of them and housed rectangular
fog lamps. The parking lights were now round. The front end styling with its dazzling combination of paint and chrome was complemented by the graceful contours of the hood. The front and rear fenders were extended into the doors, or in the case of the two door models, into the body. Although this had first been seen on the 1941 60 Special, the shape was far more dramatic with its radius flowing forward into the lower surface.

The 1942 Series 62 had a more generous trunk, larger seats, additional floor space and an electrically powered convertible top. Chrome bullet shapes appeared on the substantial front and rear bumpers along with heavy moldings along the sides of the body. It also incorporated quarter windows in its design for the very first time. This older restored Cadillac still catches everyone’s attention despite the slight patina it now bears. Its red paint and black convertible top are a stunning combination. Although some minor pitting can be found on its classic egg crate grille, the chrome bumpers and trim are excellent. Inside the contrasting navy blue leather seats and panels show minimal wear, as do the rich-looking dark blue carpets.

Because this rare Cadillac was popular as a “wedding” car it has been fitted with a modern sound system that operates from a separate, hidden 12 volt system. If so desired, this can easily be removed, as it in no way compromised this 62’s original six volt electrical system as no modifications were necessary. The vendor reports the engine runs well and requires only fresh detailing, not servicing. For future concours events this rare open Cadillac likely requires only minor cosmetic restoration.

A total of 4,961 Series 62 Cadillacs were built before the start of World War II halted production. Cadillac V8 engines, like the one found in the Series 62, would eventually be fitted in the Patton tanks. Very few Series 62 convertibles such as we have offered here today were built.
