The Northern Manufacturing Company was organized in 1902 by Charles B. King and Jonathan Maxwell who had both worked for R. E. Olds in Lancing, Michigan. King is touted as the first person to have driven an automobile on the streets of Detroit and built his first car in Detroit in 1896. After the fire at the Oldsmobile plant in 1901, he left his position as chief designer to establish his own company.
His latest design was to be powered by Maxwell’s new single-cylinder 5hp engine. These early versions, which looked somewhat like an Oldsmobile, were known as the “Silent Northern.” With 300 built in 1903, the successful firm also offered a twin-cylinder Touring model along with its proven single-cylinder Runabout in 1904. In 1904, Jonathan Maxwell met Benjamin Briscoe and left Northern to build his own car. Meanwhile, Northern continued to build fine quality automobiles known also for their ease of operation and clean, quiet, smooth-running engine.
This lovely example presented here is painted in a rich red and black color combination.
Attention to every detail has made this Northern not only a rolling piece of Americana, but also a very reliable and handsome horseless carriage, from its finely crafted black leather tufted seats to its gleaming brass and paintwork. The stylish Cape hood also has side curtains for inclement weather.
It was originally from the Merrell Jones Collection of Smoke Run, Pennsylvania, before being acquired by the Edwards Family Collection in 1991. At that time, it underwent a full mechanical and cosmetic restoration by Edwards Antique Automobiles. Although the engine was fully rebuilt in 1992 by Edwards, this is one of the ost authentic Northern automobiles in existence. The ar is fitted with all of its original components and the rubber mat is the original fitted in 1904 at the factory in Detroit. The only “new” fittings are its black leather cape hood, upholstery and tires.
When completed in 1992 the Northern won an AACA Junior/Senior award and in 1996 this Northern was given the Grand Champion Award for pre-1916 automobiles at the Old Car Festival at Greenfield Village. It has been VCC dated as an authentic 1904 and has successfully competed in the famous annual London to Brighton Run in England.
One might expect some wear, or patina being an older restoration, but that is not the case. Continually maintained at the highest of standards, the quality of this “Silent Northern” speaks for itself.
