Rolls-Royce’s initial success could largely be credited to the commercial and marketing genius of Claude Johnson. Johnson established very early on in his career that Rolls-Royce was truly for one market only, the wealthy. His clever pitch attracted the elite aristocracy of the United Kingdom and Europe and the Silver Ghost, Rolls-Royce’s only model during this time, was a smashing success. Nevertheless, the changing automotive market forced Rolls-Royce to come up with a new strategy. In effect the solution had to combine the unmistakable and purely individual traits of a Rolls-Royce at a lower cost yet not sacrifice any of its quality. The answer was found in the Rolls-Royce 20hp model introduced in 1922.

The 20hp was the platform on which the 25/30hp model was based, with the new model being a strategic evolution of the previous model. The main difference between the two models was increased engine output, which ultimately ensured the future success of the model. The increased power of the new model allowed the coachbuilders of the day to design more lavish, detailed coachwork without sacrificing performance as now they had more power on which to base their designs. As a result, the 25/30hp ultimately became one of the most successful Rolls-Royce models ever produced.

The example offered here is a right hand drive model that remains in very near original condition and retains its original solid and reliable engine. The Rolls-Royce is finished in black over burgundy, with gold trim lines, and complemented by a charming interior done in brown leather and wool carpets. Bodied as a Limousine, this example would have had some of the most luxurious coachwork that was available at the time. It has original “suicide” opposite opening doors and a glass divider, with individual trays – the occupants were clearly traveling first class. The vehicle also features a flip forward, front windshield, as well as fender mounted mirrors, dual side mounted spares and B-pillar semaphore mechanical flush mounted turn signals. The paint appears to be largely original and considering its age, in excellent condition.

The engine registers 41,000 miles, very likely original, and is equipped with the original wheel wrench and onboard jack system lever. Unfortunately, other original tools housed in the engine bay are missing. A highly original Mayfair bodied Rolls-Royce, this car is in
excellent condition and is certainly worth viewing in person. Mayfair only produced the coachwork for Rolls-Royce from 1935 to 1937 making this a very rare and desirable example of a 25/30 Rolls-Royce motor car.
