Whereas Henry Leland was the father of Lincoln, Edsel Ford was the one responsible for the delivery of the Zephyr. Leland had left Cadillac, "The Standard of the World,” early in 1917 following a dispute with Durant. Following World War I after building Liberty aircraft engines for the war effort, Leland easily secured backing for a new venture. A true patriot, Leland named his new luxury car after the U.S. president he admired most – Lincoln.


The first Lincoln cars were delayed and did not appear until September 1920. The new Lincoln was well engineered and constructed, but the styling, created by his son-in-law (a former ladies millinery specialist), was extremely dowdy. Investors complained about poor sales and although Leland sought out Brunn in Buffalo, New York, the company was put into receivership.


Henry Ford was quick to see the potential of Lincoln and acquired the company. The Lelands left after four months and only saw Ford in court. Edsel Ford was named president of Lincoln in 1922 and soon made improvements that increased sales dramatically. Whereas, the Lelands had sold less than 3,500 Lincolns in 17 months, Edsel delivered 5,512 cars in less than 10 months. Edsel made the Lincoln into a beautiful automobile, while maintaining its fine reputation for quality. Lincoln survived the first half of the Great Depression, but by 1935 finances were not equal to the marque’s status.


The graceful curvatures of the body lines and attention to detail created quite a sensation when the Zephyr was unveiled in 1936. With the lower priced Zephyr joining the model line up Lincoln sales soared from under 4,000 units in 1935, to over 22,000.


The Zephyr was a beautiful car with lines that were both aerodynamic and pleasing. It was designed by John Tjaarda of Briggs and refined by E.T. “Bob” Gregorie of Lincoln. Edsel Ford insisted the Zephyr be powered by a V12, rather than a modified Ford V8.


A 1937 Zephyr is easily recognizable despite the fact there were few changes. The grille now consisted of five pairs of vertical bars with a side molding that swept upward along the beltline. The hood vents were more ornate and the front bumper had less of a vee. A revised spare tire bracket that opened outward made it easier to access the trunk. Inside, a new instrument panel featured twin glove compartments with a center console.


This faultless 1937 Lincoln Zephyr Coupe was subject to one of the most fastidious restorations and although completed in the 1990s by Ed Spagnolo of Color-Rite in Connecticut, the car has rarely seen a road. This concours quality Zephyr Coupe was completely restored from the ground-up to the factory original specs. Finished in its original classic ebony paintwork this Zephyr looks as distinguished as it does sleek with its gleaming show quality chrome fittings. Under the hood, the powerful, rebuilt V12 has been fully detailed as has the undercarriage. Inside, the beige mohair interior underwent the same treatment and still appears untouched only awaiting new owners to sit and enjoy the ride. Although total Zephyr production exceeded 30,000 units in 1937, only 5,199 stylish six-passenger Zephyr coupes were built and of those that remain, this is one of the finest.
