Description: 1960 Maserati Birdcage Race Car
The Bird Cage Maserati was first built in 1959 at the Modena, Italy factory. The car is powered by a 4-cylinder Maserati 176-cid engine. The car is of the sports/racer variety, designed to compete against the big-bore machines of Ferrari, Porsche and Corvette. The named was derived from the fact the the car was built on many small diameter tubes that were welded together to form a light, yet sturdy chassis. Independent suspension and front engine were featured; however, during the winter of 1961-62, the engine was moved behind the driver and the rear engine version was born. Many wins were posted by cars of this type. Sterling Moss, Walt Hansgen and Dan Gurney were just three of the big name to appear behind the wheel of the "Bird Cage". This particular car was run in only three stateside events, posting a victory at Riverside, California with Billy Krause driving.
