This Maserati was designed for the formula one road races of Europe but was quickly adapted to the 2.5 mile oval at Indianapolis through the work of master mechanic Cotton Henning for driver Wilbur Shaw and car owner Mike Boyle. The team did quite well with the Boyle Special, winning in 1939 and again in 1940. Shaw had recorded another victory at the Speedway in 1937 in his own car which he built, and he became the second driver in Indianapolis history to win the 500 three times.
