Ralph DePalma drove in ten Indianapolis 500 Mile Races, including the inaugural event on May 30, 1911. Mechanical trouble, after gaining a tremendous lead with only two laps to go, prevented him from winning in 1912; but he led the field home in 1915 and was an outstanding contender for premier laurels on several other occasions. On his final Indianapolis appearance in 1925, he drove the Miller Special to 7th place, while his nephew, Peter DePaolo drove to victory.
