After finishing second three times at Indianapolis, Tom Sneva won his first 500 in 1983 driving this No. 5 Texaco Star for car owners Dan Cotter and George Bignotti. Bignotti was also chief mechanic on the car along with Mark Bridges. Sneva led 98 laps of the race, including the final ten laps as he passed second place finisher Al Unser on lap 190. For Bignotti, it was an unprecedented seventh time he was chief mechanic of the Indianapolis 500 winning car.
