The 1982 Indianapolis 500 provided one of the most exciting finishes ever recorded in the history of the Speedway, the closest ever at that time. Rick Mears' gallant attempt to pass Gordon Johncock during the final laps was to no avail as Gordy crossed the finish line a mere sixteen hundredths of a second ahead of Mears to win his second Indianapolis 500 Mile Race. The last American-built car to win the 500, this Patrick Wildcat was constructed at the Patrick Racing headquarters only eight blocks north of the track grounds.
