Donohue took the lead for the first time in the race on lap 188 when he passed Jerry Grant, who was forced to pit with a bad tire, and Donohue led the final 13 laps of the race. Mark also broke another Speedway record on the 150th lap of the race when he posted the fastest single lap at a speed of 187.539 mph. In five other Championship starts in 1972, Donohue finished second at both the Milwaukee 150 and the Trenton 300 in this car, and was fifth in the season standings.
