In one of the most spectacular battles for the lead in "500" history, Jim Rathmann won the 1960 Indianapolis 500 driving this No. 4 Ken-Paul Special. Rathmann qualified the car at a new track record of 146.371 mph, which was broken soon afterward by Eddie Sachs and Jim started the race from the middle of the first row. While other drivers led early in the race, it was Rathmann and the 1959 Indianapolis winner Roger Ward who dueled for the number one spot from lap 96 through lap 200. Rathmann, who had previously finished second three times at Indy, exchanged the lead with Ward 14 times during the last 105 laps, the final exchange coming on lap 197 when Rathmann recorded the fastest leading lap of the race (146.128 mph) as he passed Ward and went on to win by a margin of 12.67 seconds.
