Two Frenchmen driving Delage race cars finished first and third in th 1914 Indianapolis 500. Rene Thomas won the race in this No. 16 Delage, while Albert Guyot finished third in his Delage. The lead changed hands several times early in the race, but it was Thomas and riding mechanic Robert Laly who took over the lead on lap 116 and led the remaining 84 laps for the victory. The Delage race car had been successful on the Grand Prix circuit in Europe prior to coming to Indianapolis. A Delage took 4th and 5th place at the Grand Prix of Le Mans in the summer of 1913. This No. 16 Delage finished fourth and first at those respective events with Paul Bablot at the wheel, and it also competed in the 1915 Indianapolis 500 with John DePalma driving.
