The Giulietta was initially built in 1954 as a coupe. The car, which was sold by the thousands, was a great success for both Alfa Romeo and Bertone who built the coupe version. The Alfa Romeo-designed saloon and the Pininfarina-designed spyder were introduced in 1955. These were not cheap cars, being priced at about three times the price of a Volkswagen.
The Giulietta 1290 cc engine was rated at 53 hp at 5,200 rpm. The dashboard was equipped with a linear speedometer which was very modern for the time. The car could be ordered with either bucket seats or a 3-person bench seat.
