The R-Type, the new Bentley made its debut at the 1952 London Motor Show at Earls Court. The improvements in the R-Type included modifications to the rear suspension, which now featured leaf springs with anchorage points higher at the back than the front (partly to compensate for changed weight distribution due to the larger trunk capacity. In 1953 the chassis frame became an all-welded construction with no riveted joints. Something of a revolutionary step for the traditionally conservative Rolls-Royce management, the automatic transmission R-Type was initially made onlyh in left-hand drive form to sell overseas. It was an instant success in the United States, especially as export Bentleys now had the Twin SU carburetors formerly restricted to the home market.
