How do you spell Bentley?

Bentley cars are beautiful to look at but can be difficult to spell. We are pleased to welcome our visitors who chose to use one of the many alternative spellings for Bentley including Bently and Benteley.

W.O. Bentley

Walter Owen Bentley was born in 1888 and trained as a railway engineer in the C.N.R. shops at Doncaster. Later he managed a fleet of taxis in London. He created the legend of the Vintage cr - a green open four-seater with outside gear and brake levers. With four big cylinders, it bore a winged "B" on its radiator. He transformed the French D.F.P. car into a sports machine, placing 6th in the 1914 T.T. When the first 3-litre Bentley appeared in 1919, Bentley was also famous in another area - the creator of the B.R.2 rotary aero-engine, the "Merlin" of the First World War and the power behind Sopwith's "Camel".

At Le Mans during the next decade, he had five wins including the legendary 1927 race where Davis and Benjafield limped to a victory with a 3-litre. The 3,000 "old-school" Bentleys that left Cricklewood put a new name on the map. The luxury sixes were famous for 100 mph, 8-litre. When the finances ran out, Rolls-Royce Ltd. purchased Bentley; but in 1935 he was back with a more refined version of Lagonda's 4-1/2 litre, then a modern V-12. The Second World War put a stop to production. Later Bentley designed a smaller all-independently-sprung six for Lagonda, providing the engine for the Aston Martin DB2 series.
