80bhp, 1,971 cc overhead valve six-cylinder engine, four-speed manual transmission, independent front suspension with transverse leaf spring, live rear axle with semi-elliptic leaf springs, four-wheel hydraulic drum brakes. Wheelbase: 94.5"

The owner of this attractive BMW 328, understood to be its fifth owner, purchased it original and unmolested, in the early 1970s. In the mid-1980s he had it completely restored, with all-new body wood as well as the usual engine, chassis and sheet metal restoration. All systems were attended to, including a new period-correct wiring harness. Its originality and completeness was such that any pieces, such as top bows, that needed renewal easily served as patterns for their replacements. The transmission and differential were also overhauled at this time.

In 2005 the engine was rebuilt once again by Marcovicci-Wenz Engineering, with a new billet crank and Carrillo rods with bearing shells in place of the original poured bearings. New pistons and rings were fitted, and new valves and guides were installed in the gas-flowed cylinder head. The owner believes in driving his cars, and this one has been exercised regularly. It runs extremely well.

The snug and stylish cabriolet body by Autenrieth is very attractive, its teardrop fenders considerably more graceful than those of the more common roadster body. The skirts on the rear fenders exhibit a concentric circle motif, hinting at the wheels they hide. The deep red paint is in excellent condition, a full two decades after restoration, and the tan convertible top is nicely set off with body color landau irons. The interior is done in tan leather with matching carpets, a theme reprised in the luggage compartment, which opens from the top. The spare tire is subtly recessed into the lid, and its uncovered functionality provides nice contrast to the otherwise unbroken lines of the body.

The engine and its compartment are clean and carefully detailed, but not overdone. The chassis and underbody are similarly sanitary, the latter finished in body color. The overall result is a car as spritely as the 328 roadster, but considerably more comfortable and exuding an air of exclusivity. A new owner can enjoy it while rallying, touring or simply driving it on the open road.
