1987 Buick Grand National Coupe

1987 Buick Grand National Coupe
25,300.00 USD
1987 Buick Grand National Coupe Worldwide Group Auctions The Houston Classic Auction Saturday, May 2, 2009 Website: www.wwgauctions.com Lot # 9 $25,300 3.8 liter turbocharged V6 rated at 245 horsepower, Turbo HydraMatic automatic transmission, front independent and live rear axle with coil springs, front disc and rear drum brakes; wheelbase: 108" CHASSIS NO: 1G4GJ1175HP420154 In 1982, Buick introduced the Regal Grand National. Named for the NASCAR Grand National racing series, it came equipped with a naturally aspirated 4.1 liter V6 engine rated at 125 horsepower at 4,000 revolutions. Also offered was an optional turbocharged version producing 175. Only 215 Regal Grand Nationals were produced in 1982, and it is believed that just 16 of these were actually turbocharged. The Buick Sport Coupe also came with the turbocharged engine, of which only 2,022 were produced. The following year, no Buick Regal Grand Nationals were produced, leaving many to wonder if this model was simply an evolutionary flash in the pan. Alas, in 1984 the "T-Type," as it was now known because of its turbocharged motor, returned simply as the Buick Grand National and was clad in all black paint. The turbocharged 3.8 liter power plant became standard, was refined with sequential fuel injection, and boasted 200 horsepower at 4,400 revolutions. That year saw production of 5,204 Turbo Regals, only 2,000 of which were Grand Nationals. In 1986, a modified engine design with intercooling boosted the performance even further, and in 1987 with the sum of further modifications it reached 245 horsepower. The mid-1980's reappearance could be considered a throwback to the earlier horsepower escalations of the 1960s. At its peak rating of 245 ponies in 1987, zero to sixty times were achieved in under five seconds, an accomplishment very respectable even by today's standards. Due to its initial release at the height of Star Wars fever, the blacked out Grand National received the titled "Darth Vader Car." When covering the introduction of the limited 1987 GNX model, "Car and Driver" even went so far as to introduce the car with the headline "Darth Vader, your car is ready." The example presented here is a 1987 Buick Grand National and is all original including its low reading of only 4,600 miles. The first owner had the car until 1998 at which time it read an extremely low 900 miles. That the miles have been added recently is a positive aspect as it attests to the fact that this car has been maintained and is drivable wherever its owner chooses to take it. This car originated in South Texas which explains the excellent condition it is presented in today with all original paint and bodywork. The motor and transmission are entirely stock with the exception of a modified exhaust, which allows for a free flowing down pipe. The engine bay has been very nicely detailed, and the new owner will be proud to show it off to visitors. The interior presents in excellent condition as well with only minor wear. The same can be said for the trunk which is clean and original and includes all accessories including jack and spare. Scrutiny can even be given to the underside of this Buick which is reflective of the relative youth and low mileage of the car. Perhaps most exciting is the documentation list that accompanies this car: the original window sticker, sales invoice and sales contract, letters from the dealer to owner, dealer order form, temporary plate from original registration, and original title. The original contract was used in fact to sell the car from its first to second owner and is also accompanied by a mileage statement from the second owner. This paper trail will be of huge value in the years to come as cars from the 1980s see price escalation like their cousins from previous decades and prospective buyers look for documentation. Buick Grand Nationals have already begun their ascent up the chain of desirability, and this is your chance to own a pristine example of what is sure to be the most desirable production car to roll out of 1980's Detroit!

1987 Buick Regal Grand National 40,000 LotNumber 331 ExteriorColor BLACK Interiorcolor BLACK Summary 231cid/250 hp V6 with an automatic. One owner since new with dealer installed NOS. Professionally maintained and garaged. Description As a former Buick Dealer(retired in 1996 Niles Auto Co. Santa Rosa, Ca) In 1987 we had 10 GN'S in stock near the end of the model run. With no production in "88 they were a 'HOT' item and fast, so I kept one. One of my ace mechanics suggested Nitrous would make it really fast. I consulted with Buick engineers at Flint, MI. and had it installed. It's really fast! I've been the sole driver and never raced it! Freeway passing is quite a thrill though. We repainted the hood and deck lid. It has been garaged all the time.
