The Cadillac Automobile Company was organized in the fall of 1902 in Detroit, Michigan. The guiding genius of the newly formed company was Henry M. Leland. Leland manufactured precision machinery and quality gasoline engines through the Leland & Faulconer Company and recognized the opportunity to enter the budding motor vehicle industry.
Three prototype vehicles, designated "Model A", were built early in 1903 and were exhibited at the New York National Automobile Show, resulting in orders for 2,286 vehicles.
