Automobiles of Amelia Island Collector Car Auction
Amelia Island, Florida
March 13, 2009
AUCTION RESULTS: Lot 111 - Sold at a price of $88,000

305 bhp, 365 cu. in. V8 engine, dual Carter four-barrel carburetors, four-speed Hydra-Matic Drive automatic transmission, independent front suspension with coil springs and torsion-rod stabilizer bar, semi-floating rear axle with semi-elliptic leaf springs, and four-wheel power-assisted hydraulic drum brakes. Wheelbase: 129"

The outstanding 1956 Eldorado Biarritz Convertible offered here benefits from an authentic and exacting body-off-frame restoration. Its deep Chantilly Maroon exterior finish is perfectly complemented by gleaming brightwork, a gold-finished grille, a recently refurbished white convertible top and the factory-correct parade boot. The interior is trimmed in two-tone black and white leather upholstery with all-new carpeting, while the impressively restored dash contains a set of properly working instruments.

The rebuilt and highly detailed Cadillac overhead-valve V8 engine displaces 365 cubic inches and delivers 305 hp, thanks to a higher 9.75:1 compression ratio and a pair of well-tuned Carter carburetors that are topped by a striking gold-finished "bat wing" dual-element air cleaner. In addition, the refined Hydra-Matic four-speed automatic transmission provides smooth shifts with enhancements that were introduced for 1956, including a new and virtually maintenance-free fluid coupling.

When new, the 1956 Eldorado offered a staggering list of nearly 30 standard features, including electric window lifts, fog lamps, a six-way power front seat, power brakes, power steering and a multitude of comfort and convenience items. This Eldorado is also equipped with a desirable Wonderbar AM radio, an optional remote-control trunk release, a Continental spare tire kit, wide whitewall tires and a very rare set of gold-finished "Sabre-Spoke" wheels, which were a no-cost Eldorado option for 1956.

Since completion of the restoration, the Eldorado has covered only about 1,000 miles. It is a very impressive and well sorted example that reportedly runs and drives as well as it looks, with recent work including attention to the power window lifts, which were checked to ensure reliable operation. As much a dream machine today as when new, this 1956 Eldorado Biarritz will certainly take pride of place in any collection of the finest automotive icons of the fabulous 1950s.
