Cadillac Ranch Near Amarillo Texas
If you are one of the millions who have driven on Interstate 40, about 10 miles west of Amarillo, Texas, you have seen this row of partially buried Cadillacs and wondered "why?". Several years ago Charles Kuralt of the CBS News "On The Road" TV show, stopped and asked the ranch owner about the "monument". The owner replied, "I have tried to tell every one who asks me that a different answer. I have now told so many lies that I don't remember the truth".
There is now a small parking area and a gate in the fence to allow visitors to get to the cars. Anyone is permitted (encouraged) to leave their mark on the cars. Occasionally the owner has them repainted to present new artists a clean beginning. If you want to go to the Cadillac Ranch, try to pick a day when the wind is blowing from the east (rare). The cars are located east of a very large cattle feed lot and the "fresh country air" can be a little overwhelming.
