Chevrolet introduced the Chevelle in 1964 as a mid-size auto with models ranging from low-priced family vehicles including station wagons to high-performance coupes and convertibles. With its 1964 intruction, the Malibu was simply the top trim level of the Chevelle and would replace the Chevelle model name in 1978.
The Chevelle chassis was based on the General Motors "A" Platform.
From 1964 to 1969, Pontiac produced a very similar car in Canada re-trimmed and badged as a "Beaumont".
