During the business recession that followed WW I, the Maxwell Company and the Chalmers Company merged. Walter P. Chrysler, who had recently retired as President of Buick, was persuaded to assume the leadership of the new Maxwell Company. In 1924, the Maxwell Company became the Chrysler Corporation and began offering its first Chrysler, the 1924 Chrysler Model B Phaeton, introduced at the 1924 New York Auto Show.

In 1928 the Chrysler Corporation bought Dodge Brothers. The 1929 Dodge models were the first produced under the ownership.

In 1987, American Motors Corporation is bought out by Chrysler Corporation.

In 1993, General Motors sells Lotus to Chrysler Corporation.
