Continuing the tradition started in 1955, the idea of performance in a full-size Chrysler was the exclusive property of the "letter cars," and for 1962 that meant the 300H was king of the hill. With competition among American car makers wide open for performance, the mystique of the 300s was a bit less this year, but when you found out that there was a whopping 400 horses pumped out of that dual-quad "wedge" V8, plus doing it with all the luxury you would expect in an up-scale car, it made the $5,090 base price well worth the money.
Starting in 1962, Chrysler had fielded an intermediate range of cars between the Newport and New Yorkers billed as the "300s." Though the numbers were the same as the letter-car series, these were a little more mundane in their composition.; however, there was a healthy list of powertrain options, and if the right boxes were checked, a customer could get as much power as those with a letter behind the numbers.
