1928 Porter from My Mother The Car
Photos by Douglas Wilkinson
This is the original film car from the My Mother the Car TV series on NBC, 1966 and 1967, starring Jerry Van Dyke and Avery Schreiber. The show was based on the mother being reincarnated as the 1928 Porter owned by her son.
To create this unique 4-Door car, George Barris customized a 1927 Ford Model T Touring into a driverless, talking car whose voice was that of actress Ann Southern. To simulate the appearance of the car driving itself, a stuntman concealed himself in a rear floorboard seat. From there he controlled all functions of the car. He used periscopes installed in the front seat and mirrors underneath the car to see where he was going.
