The company originally manufactured rolling stock for railways. It entered the automobile business in 1897 with a horizontal twin cylinder 2.3 liter model. The firm subsequently employed Ettore Bugatti who created some advanced chain-driven four-cylinder autos with magneto and coil ignition and armored wooden frames.
