De Tomaso Pantera

The de Tomaso Pantera represents a unique partnership between an Italian coach builder and the Ford Motor Company.

Combining exotic Italian styling with a reliable, easy-to-service Ford engine, the Pantera was available at select Lincoln-Mercury dealers across the US. Early models suffered from overheating (a problem common with mid-engined cars) and other problems. However, the Panter was fast, beautiful, and relatively inexpensive at $10,000.

About 6,000 of these Italian-American supercars were sold in the United States from 1971 to 1974.

De Tomaso History

De Tomaso Automobili was founded by Alejandro De Tomaso in 1959 in Modena Italy to build racing cars. The cars used a chassis designed by De Tomaso with engines initially from OSCA and then later from Ford.

The company's first road car, the nid-engined Deauville, was introduced in 1963. The Mangusta prototype was first shown in 1966 at the Turin Motorshow. It was to be the fore-runner of De Tomaso's most successful car, the Pantera in 1970.

Other models produced by De Tomaso include the Vallelunga (1963), Deuville Coupe (1970), Longchamp (1972), and Guara (1993).
