1965 Dodge A/FX Funny Car

A/FX means Altered Factory Experimental
The Big 3, locked in a battle for customers, fought at America's drag strips - with the keys to success being engine power, light weight, and good traction. Traction was improved by moving weight over the powered rear wheels. Although the rules allowed the engine to be moved rearward, Chrysler engineers went the other way - moving the rea wheels forward 15 inches and the front wheels forward by 10 inches. These odd looking "altered factory experimental" class cars became known as "funny cars".

Weight reduction - from 3500 lns down to 2600 - was accomplished by dipping the body shell in acid, using lightweight cross members, magnesium front wheels, acrilic windows, aircraft-type seating and fiberglass hood, trunk, doors, bumbers, and fenders. The A/FX did the quarter mile in 9.52 seconds, hitting 147.5 mph.

Chrysler prepared 6 Dodge and 6 Plymouth A/FX cars and only a few survive. This one retains its original - and rare- 4-speed manual transmission.
