Wheelbase: 94.5" In 1968, Ferrari unveiled its replacement for the beautiful 275 GTB/4 Berlinetta in Paris. The new 365 GTB/4 was more than a worthy replacement for its predecessor, with which it shared a chassis, suspension, 2,400 mm wheelbase and much of its layout. As the last front-engine Berlinetta, Pininfarina produced an attractive design that at once paid homage to the car's heritage while providing clients with an exciting new look for Ferrari's flagship road-going model. The smooth, unbroken design was accented by a crease that ran the length of the body, just below the top of the wheel wells. Up front, the small, black egg crate grill was complemented by rubber-tipped bumperettes. A matching set of bumperettes was fitted at the rear below four round taillights, a design feature that has persisted to this day. Constructed by Scaglietti, overall weight of the Daytona was reduced by utilizing aluminum for the doors, bonnet and boot lid. Initially, the headlights were set back behind a transparent full-width plastic cover. American safety regulations required that Daytonas produced for stateside exportation be fitted with retractable headlights under two flush-fitting panels. Three-eared knock-off wheels were also replaced with plain, hexagonal-type units. By 1971, however, the concealed headlamps were adopted series-wide. In fact, about 1,285 Daytona Coupés were assembled over a production run that lasted through 1974. For the 365 GTB/4, Ferrari adopted its tried and true Colombo-designed V12. Displacing 4.4-liters, the 12-cylinder engine utilized four overhead camshafts and was fitted with six Weber 40DCN 20 carburetors, producing 352 horsepower at 7,500 rpm. The not-unrealistic top speed of 174 mph claimed by Ferrari was tested by the daring drivers at Road and Track who reached 173 miles per hour in their GTB/4. From a standstill, it reached 60 mph up in just 5.9 seconds, and the 3,500-pound car could turn the quarter-mile in 13.8 seconds – both tremendous achievements. Incidentally, several 365 GTB/4s were raced by their owners. As late as 1979, a factory-prepared, NART-entered version came in second at Daytona with Paul Newman as one of the drivers. Not all racing endeavors were entirely legal, however; Brock Yates and the Le Mans-winning Dan Gurney claim to have tested the Daytona's top speed for themselves on the public highways of Arizona during the second running of the original Cannonball Baker Memorial Trophy Dash between New York City and Los Angeles. The Cannonball Run, as it came to be known, was later immortalized on the silver screen. What had initially been conceived as an interim model for the long-overdue 365 GT4 Berlinetta Boxer had not only become the costliest production Ferrari to date but also the fastest, most attractive and, quite possibly, the most desirable car in the world. Daytona Spyder Alongside the 365 GTB/4 Berlinetta, however, Ferrari also produced a small series of Spyder variants, which remain among the most sought-after and highly regarded Ferraris to date. Interestingly, those examples officially exported to the United States were stamped as "365 GTB/4" instead of "365 GTS/4" and are therefore referred to as such. The first "Daytona Spyder" was presented at the 44th Annual IAA Motor Show in Frankfurt on September 11, 1969. The example shown was finished in yellow with the concave bodyline finished in black and featured Borrani wire wheels. The rear wings were squared-off on the top edges, losing some of the roundness of the Berlinetta and subtly altering the accent of the bodyline. The first Daytona Spyder was fitted with the Perspex-covered headlights, although all further examples sported pop-up headlights. In all, Ferrari produced just 121 Daytona Spyders, including the prototype example. Ninety-six units were destined for the U.S. market, and merely 25 were built to European specifications. Clearly, the bulk of production was destined for Ferrari's most important export market: the United States. Chassis no. 14671 This car is one of these U.S. versions. It is the 26th Daytona Spyder built by Carrozzeria Scaglietti in Modena and was originally ordered in yellow (Giallo Fly 20-Y-191) with a black interior. According to the factory files, 22 of the 121 cars built, plus the prototype, were originally painted in the traditional Giallo Fly. Serial number 14671 has Scaglietti body number 636 and was equipped with the desirable feature of air conditioning. As a U.S. delivery car, the speedometer is calibrated in miles. Chassis no. 14671 was completed in October 1971. The original destination was Luigi Chinetti Motors in Greenwich, Connecticut. After certificate of origin number 8747 was issued, the brand new yellow 365 GTB/4 Spyder was shipped on December 18, 1971 aboard the vessel "SS Savonita" from Italy to New York, where it arrived on Thursday, January 27, 1972. In March, Chinetti Motors invoiced the Spyder to Roger Penske's Chevrolet dealership in Southfield, Michigan. Penske then leased it from 1972 to 1976 to first owner J. Anthony Forstman, a businessman in New York City. In October 1978, this Daytona Spyder was back at Chinetti Motors, who advertised it for sale in the Los Angeles Times. In 1982, it entered the long-term ownership of Mr. Edsel Ford II, Ford Motor Company Board Member, former head of Ford Australia and the great grandson of Henry Ford. Ford, who resides with his family in Grosse Pointe, Michigan, maintained the car over the years and showed it at the Concours Italian Style down the road at Grosse Pointe Shores in 2002. Never neglected or abused, this highly original car was garaged at his private residence and was very well maintained. In 2007 it was offered for the first time on the open market when it was consigned to RM's first Ferrari – Leggenda e Passione auction at the Ferrari factory in Maranello Italy. As the bidding concluded at this inaugural event, the stunning yellow Ferrari had far surpassed its pre-sale estimate. Speaking of the experience for a subsequent issue of RM's bi-annual RM Magazine, Mr. Ford remarked, "One of my lifelong dreams was to go to Maranello. It was like going to auto heaven!" The current owner, a dedicated collector in his own right, became only the car's third known owner and commissioned extensive additional work on the car to bring it to superb, show-quality condition. The car had previously never been restored, although a few panels had been repainted. Working in conjunction with FCA judges, the owner commissioned marque expert Jeff Provo to ensure the car was brought to 99-point, perhaps even 100-point, condition. A complete bare-metal re-spray was conducted to a first-class mirror-like finish. All of the body panels are straight and the gaps are excellent. The brightwork was redone, bumpers were re-chromed, and the suspension and brakes were rebuilt. The exhaust system was ceramic-coated, and engine work included rebuilding the six Weber carburetors. A slight repair was made to one of the cam lobes, a new radiator core was installed, and the electrical system was refreshed as well, including the replacement of the incorrect radio with a proper Becker AM/FM/Cassette unit. Moreover, the windshield was replaced and the interior received new carpets, leather upholstery and door pads. The dash was redone with new old stock "mousehair," which is very difficult to find, and all of the instruments work perfectly. Finally, the air conditioning system was rebuilt to ensure it blows cold air, and the top was refurbished with new fabric and top mechanism as well as a correct black tonneau cover. Four new tires were added to the refurbished Borrani wire wheels. As presented, the car runs and drives superbly, and every gauge, instrument and electrical feature works perfectly. Everything is factory correct, down to the hoses and clamps. Please note the paperwork and receipts for the work conducted while in the current owner's care are available for review in the auction office onsite in Amelia Island. In August 2009, 14671 was invited to The Quail for a special FCA 30-car display of "The Great Ferraris." The Quail: A Motorsports Gathering is part of Monterey, California's annual week of classic car events, culminating of course in the famed Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance. This particular Daytona Spyder was invited to the event, along with the owner's 275 GTB/4, which is also offered in this auction. Both cars were recently driven by Forza magazine for a comparison test that will be on newsstands by the time of the sale. Please also note this car comes with a full tool roll and leather pouch with original manuals as well as original documentation and a binder confirming its Ferrari Classiche certification. Powerful, sexy and tremendously fast, the GTB/4 stands out as one of the finest sports cars ever produced by Ferrari and undoubtedly one of the most exciting to drive. The open Spyder configuration is a favorite among Ferraristi and a perpetually desirable model boasting a gorgeous Pininfarina design and superb V12 performance. This example further sets itself apart with well-documented ownership history and superb restoration work. With the exception of its appearance at The Quail, it has never been shown before and would undoubtedly make for an impressive, high-point entry at any concours event.

1971 Ferrari 365 GTB/4 Daytona For Sale The Ferrari 365 GTB/4, better known by the unofficial name Ferrari Daytona, is a Gran Turismo automobile produced from 1968 to 1973. It was first introduced to the public at the Paris Auto Salon in 1968 and replaced the 275 GTB/4 but, although it was also a Pininfarina design (by Leonardo Fioravanti), the Daytona was radically different. Its sharp-edged styling resembled a Lamborghini more than a traditional Pininfarina Ferrari. The Daytona name commemorates Ferrari’s triple success in the February 1967 24 Hours of Daytona with the 330P4. While it was initially used as a pre-production internal denomination, Ferrari still insists that this was never the model’s official name and should not be applied to it. Unlike Lamborghini’s new Miura, the Daytona was a traditional front-engined, rear-drive car. Today, the car represents the last of the great front engine Ferrari GTs. This car was restored in 2002, with Grand Touring Classic handling the mechanicals. It comes with records showing it was originally sold to Bill Harrah in Reno, NV. It comes out of a very prestigous collection of Ferrari’s. It comes with a full tool roll, books and records. Only 22,000 miles from new. A wonderful addition to any collection.
