Shortly after the F355 coupe had been introduced in late 1994, Pininfarina began the work of creating an equally attractive Spider based on the same chassis. Introduced at the 1995 Grand Prix of Monte Carlo, it was an immediate success. The body was reinforced with extra gussets around the door opening and on the windshield pillars to minimize torsional flex that often comes with open body styles. From any angle this car is spectacular, as even with the top up, the original lines of the Berlinetta are followed keeping the aerodynamics at their optimum state. Powered by a newly designed 3.5 liter, five-valve-per-cylender V8 engine, that developed 375 horsepower at 8250 rpm and the redline set at 8500 rpm, it produced an amazing 109 bhp per liter. Formula 1 lessons were applied to the engine construction which had Nikasil coated wet steel liners in the aluminum block and light forged aluminum alloy pistons attached to the crankshaft through titanium alloy connecting rods.
