Wheelbase: 92.1" At the 1965 Paris Auto show Ferrari introduced the 275GTB, its first independent rear suspension car and a major change for Ferrari, a company that favored slow evolution. Even more dramatic though was the Dino 206S show car, a mid-engined concept powered by a two liter V6. Enzo Ferrari’s son Alfredino had died in 1956 while developing a 1.5 liter V6 Formula Two engine, later redesigned by Vittorio Jano. This series of 65 degree V6 engines had powered Ferrari’s Formula One cars since 1957 and a series of Dino sports racers that were particularly successful in hillclimbs and tight circuit races where the smaller Dinos’ nimble handling gave them an advantage over Ferrari’s larger V12 powered sports racers. The Dino 206S unveiled at Paris in 1965 was succeeded at the Turin show in 1966 by a Dino Berlinetta GT. The production version Dino 206GT appeared a year later also at Turin. Powered by the 180hp, 1,986cc V6 it was not only Ferrari’s first mid-engined production car but also a new Ferrari-based Dino brand (although it’s probably safe to assume the word “brand” never crossed Ferrari’s lips) and was presented devoid of Ferrari identification. The engine was built by Fiat, foreshadowing the growing relationship between Ferrari and the Italian auto giant and was also used in the Fiat Dino 206 front engined coupe and spider. Even with Dino badges and a Fiat-built engine the 206 GT’s lineage was clearly Ferrari. Its performance became even more exhilarating in 1969 when the V6 was enlarged to 2,418cc and the power increased to 195hp in the V6 powered Dino’s ultimate evolution, the 246 GT. While Ferraris have always been about free-revving highperformance engines, the Dino 246 GTs have quick, responsive handling that immediately separates them from earlier frontengined Ferraris and directly led to the present generation of Ferrari road cars. Exceptionally attractive Pininfarina styling incorporating elements from the Dino sports racers complements the performance of the road going Dinos. These attributes have established the 246 GT as one of the most popular Ferraris of all time. This very proper example is a lovely Dino that features excellent paintwork and interior. Finished in the sporting red with a black removable hard top, the Ferrari on offer here boasts a beautiful tan leather interior. The brightwork on the Ferrari is also in excellent condition. One of the ultimate Ferraris of the 1970s, this Dino is an excellent example; it combines the dynamic advantages of a mid-mounted engine with an understated Italian design that in either hard top or open air delivers the driving sensation only a Ferrari can bring.
