1930 Ford

In 1930 the Ford division of FoMoCo suffered severe sales declines as did the rest of the American auto industry, But the good news for Ford was that its decline of 23 percent was not nearly as bad as the industry average of about 50 percent. Ford?s sales of 1,140,710 cars actually gave the company an increase of market share to 41 percent, up by nine points.

Under the direction of Edsel Ford, the company president, the Model A had received some smart new design changes just prior to the stock market crash in 1929.

Changes included:

As in 1929, the Model A was offered in numberous body styles including coupes, sports coupes, roadsters, cabriolets all available with or without rumble seats. In addition to these models, the line included two-door ("Tudor"), four-door ("Fordor") sedans, a dignified Town Sedan and a wood-body station wagon. Most could be purchased with Standard or DeLuxe trim which featured brighter colors and spiffier trim.

Prices ranged from $435 for the basic two-seat roadster to $660 for the deluxe Town Car. There was also available a very deluxe Town Car with a canvas-covered formal roof that could be purchased for $1,200. Only 96 of these pricey cars were built.

In the middle of the model year, two additional models were introduced. Arriving in June was a $625 DeLuxe two-door Phaeton. It seated 5 and featured as standard a left-mount spare, chrome trunk rack, leather upholstery, and lower steering wheel and windshield. Later Ford started making the Victoria model which featured a slanted windshield, a style that was to become standard in the industry.

The 1930 Model A was powered by Ford's four-cylinder, 220.5 cid, 40 hp engine.
