1940 Ford Panel Brougham by Rollson

1940 Ford Panel Brougham by Rollson
55,000.00 USD
1940 Ford Panel Brougham by Rollson RM Auctions Automobiles of Amelia Island Collector Car Auction Amelia Island, Florida March 13, 2009 AUCTION RESULTS: Lot 153 - Sold at a price of $55,000 Model 01A. 85 bhp, 221 cu. in. L-head V8 engine, three-speed sliding gear manual transmission, solid front axle with transverse leaf spring, 3/4-floating rear axle with transverse leaf spring, and Lockheed four-wheel hydraulic drum brakes. Wheelbase: 112" The car offered here is the only example of a Ford chassis fitted with Panel Brougham bodywork by Rollson in 1940. It was the brainchild of noted designer Rudy Creteur, who had taken over the assets of the Rollston Body Company in 1938 before changing its name to Rollson. This was perhaps his most successful design, featuring a high roofline and Rollson's characteristically over-engineered construction, with aluminum used for the rear body and doors, while the hood and fenders are steel. Stylistically, its razor-edge styling and open chauffeur's compartment gave the car an undeniably elegant look, while the excellent Ford chassis and V8 powertrain provided outstanding performance, handling and braking for the era. According to a copy of the original purchase invoice dated May 22, 1940, the car was purchased new by Mr. John R. Bradley, a resident of the Waldorf Towers in New York City. Priced at $4,284.15, this car was certainly quite pricey for its time. In fact, its Ford chassis and instantly recognizable frontal bodywork were perfectly suited to Mr. Bradley, who apparently preferred not to be seen in a more conspicuous luxury automobile such as a Cadillac, Packard or Rolls-Royce. Acquired by the O'Quinn Collection in 2007 from noted Pebble Beach judge and collector Roger Morrison of Salina, Kansas, this stately Rollson Panel Brougham is appropriately finished in formal black, with the chauffeur's compartment trimmed in black leather and separated from the passenger compartment by a division window, while an intercom system allows communication between compartments. At the rear, the passenger compartment features blue cloth upholstery and inlaid wood trim accents, with luxurious amenities including sterling silver bud vases, a vanity mirror and a heater, as well as a number of handy compartments for brandy snifters, brushes, cosmetic jars, perfume bottles and wine glasses. An older restoration that remains quite presentable today, this unique coachbuilt automobile was displayed at Pebble Beach in 1998. It is offered complete with extensive documentation, most notably including copies of the original Rollson specification sheet, purchase invoice and design sketch. Other items include numerous photographs, a large selection of service invoices, copies of newspaper clippings and copies of Ford operating instructions.

1940 Ford Cars and Trucks

The 1940 Ford was a continuation of the basic style introduced in 1937. A major change would take place in the 1941 models.

The 1940 DeLuxe Line consisted of six body styles and offered sealed beam headlights, as did most American car manufacturers in 1940.
