1949 Ford Overview
The 1949 Fords were introduced at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel in New York City on June 10, 1948. Ford would produce 1,118,740 passenger cars for the model year.
1949 was the year for major changes in the Ford styling. The chassis was updated to include longitudinal rear springs replacing the transverse springs used previously. Styling changes include:
- Completely new grille with heavy chrome molding curving from the top of the grille down to the gravel reflector
- "FORD" in large block letters mounted above the grille molding
- Horizontal chrome bar in the center of the grille extending the full width of the opening with parking lights mounted at the ends of the bar
- In the center of the bar, a large spinner with either a "6" or "8" to designate the engine choice
- Slab-sided body, eliminating the rear fender bulge
- Chrome strip extending from the front wheel opening to the gas cap near the rear of the car
Ford offered their 49 car in two trim levels, the bottom level simply called "Ford", and the top trim level called "Ford Custom". The "Ford" series included rubber molding around the window openings, a horn button, and only one sun visor and armrest. The "Ford Custom" included chrome window molding, a horn ring, and two sun visors and armrests on each door.
