In its second season, Ford's Thunderbird saw a number of subtle improvements starting under the hood. Now available was a 312 cubic inch V8 topped off with the "beehive" four-barrel carburetor that boosted the horsepower rating to 212. This year a switch 12-volt, negative ground electrical systems met the new industry standard. For the passengers, a very welcomed change was the addition of fresh-air vents placed on the side of the front fenders, allowing cooler outside air to circulate under the dash and remove some of the excess heat coming in from the engine bay. Also, with the spare tire now being mounted in "Continental" fashion, there was more room for important packages in the trunk.
