1965 Ford Mustangs
The big news for the 1965 Mustang was the addition of the 2+2 fastback model which featured a larger backlight glass and a shorter trunk lid. The 65 Mustang fastback also had functional fresh air vents on the B-pillars and a folding rear seat back that gave exceptional carring capacity.
Sales of the 65 Mustang continued to be terrific with a total sales for the model year exceeding a half-million units.

Changes for the 1965 Mustang
Changes from the original Mustang, introduced just six months earlier, were minimal and primarily engineering refinements. New features for the 65 Mustang included:
- The generator was replaced with an alternator
- Interior door handles were now secured with Allen screws instead of C-clips
- Push-down door lock button were chrome plated intead of colored to match the interior
- Letter spacing on the lower bodyside nameplate was widened creating a 5-inch wide measurement
- The 170 cid Falcon-derived 6-cylinder engine was replaced with the 200 cid 6 used in Ford's fullsized cars
A GT package was offered that included:
- 225-hp V-8 engine (271-hp engine optional)
- 3-speed, fully-synchronized stick shift (4-speed optional)
- special GT grille with built-in fog lamps
- GT front fender insignia
- GT five-dial instrument cluster
- GT paint stripes (optional)
- dual exhaust system with trumpet extensions
- front wheel disc brakes
- special handling package
A luxury interior option was available that included:
- instrument panel with wood-grained vinyl trim
- bucket seats with embossed inserts
- sporty steering wheel with chromed rivets
- integral door armrests and door courtesy lights
The embossed bucket seats became known as the "pony" interior, as the embossment showed herds of stylized wild mustangs.
The FoMoCo Genuine Parts division of Ford offered a series of "Cobra" performance kits for the V-8 engines. These included extras from simple chrome dress-up parts and a Cobra distributor kit to engine performance kits, cam kits, heavy-duty clutch kits and induction kits with single 4-barrel, dual 4-barrel, and triple 2-barrell carburetor setups.
