1968 Shelby Mustang GT 500 Convertible

1968 Shelby Mustang GT 500 Convertible
151,250.00 USD
1968 Shelby Mustang GT 500 Convertible RM Auctions Automobiles of Amelia Island Collector Car Auction Amelia Island, Florida March 13, 2010 AUCTION RESULTS: Lot 157 - Sold at a price of $151,250 355 bhp, 428 cu. in. V8 engine, C-6 three-speed automatic transmission, independent front suspension with unequal-length control arms, coil springs and anti-roll bar, live rear axle with semi-elliptic leaf springs, and front disc, rear drum hydraulic brakes. Wheelbase: 108" As the new 1967 Mustang body shell had been designed from the outset to accept Ford's 390 cubic inch big-block engine, Shelby dropped Ford's Interceptor 428 into the pony car's engine bay, creating the GT 500 in 1967. Conservatively rated at 355 horsepower, actual output was closer to 400 horsepower, accompanied by 420 ft-lbs of tire-scorching torque! Although this powerplant continued to power the GT 500 with modifications through 1970, stylists ensured that the Shelby GTs retained their unique identities. For 1968, the GT 500 was updated with an aggressive new front-end treatment including a lengthened hood line, while a neatly integrated rear spoiler was added, as well as revised head and tail lamps. Inside, a roll bar with inertia-reel shoulder belts was added, and for the first time, handsome convertible variants of both the GT 350 and the top-line GT 500 appeared. According to its accompanying Marti Report, this 1968 Shelby GT 500 Convertible is one of just 17 examples with an Acapulco Blue exterior finish and Ginger interior combination. It was built on January 23, 1968 and delivered to the original selling dealer, Healy Ford Center of Edmonton, Alberta, who sold the car to its original owner for $5,000. In addition to the powerful 428 V8 engine, it was equipped with a heavy-duty C-6 automatic transmission, power front disc brakes, power steering, a power-operated top and Shelby 10-spoke alloy wheels. Other desirable options included the upgraded cooling package, visibility group, wheel lip moldings, a tilt-away steering column, an AM radio and the interior décor group, plus a tachometer and a trip odometer. The O'Quinn Collection acquired the GT 500 in early 2007, and today, it remains a very fine restored example of the legendary Shelby GT 500. It is offered complete with a Deluxe Marti Report, high-quality color copies of the original build sheet and dealer invoice, as well as an original-appearing 1968 Ford Mustang owner's manual and a 1968 Shelby GT 350/GT 500 owner's manual.

We are very proud to offer this incredibly rare 1968 Ford Mustang GT Convertible. Finished in very rare Presidential Blue over Deluxe Blue Decor interior, it is one of only 50 ever made in this combination! Moreover, the Deluxe Interior found its way into only 3,339 convertibles in 1968 compared to over 22,000 completed with the standard interior! Adding to this gorgeous vehicle is a very strong list of factory options which includes J-code 302ci V8-4V Premium Fuel engine, C4 automatic transmission, Selectaire air conditioning, GT Equipment Package, power disc brakes, power steering, power convertible top with glass backlite, white reflective C-stripe, tinted glass, AM/FM radio, and correct F70-14 white lettered nylon tires! Philco was a space engineering firm that produced satellites in the 1960's which was actually owned by Ford Motor Company as their space systems division of Ford Aerospace! It's just one more very interesting tale of a very special car that probably went to an employee within the vast Ford empire! This car has seen only a complete restoration that included its first repaint from new, new interior upholstery, new convertible top & boot, exhaust, tires, rebuilt drive train and suspension! It has traveled only 500 miles since completion and is undoubtedly ready to show and drive! It comes complete with Marti report, original door tag, owner's manual, warranty booklet, radio instruction booklet, and driver safety tips brochure.
