AUCTION RESULTS: Lot was Sold at a price of $79,200

65hp, 221 cu. in. L-head V8 engine, single-barrel carburetor, three-speed manual transmission, live front and rear axles with transverse leaf springs, and four-wheel mechanical drum brakes. Wheelbase: 106"

By 1931, dwindling sales of Ford's Model A had automotive industry insiders writing off Henry's "Flivver Car Company" as being unable to keep up with the times. However, Henry Ford had an ace up his sleeve. The revolutionary V8 line, developed in secret and introduced on March 31, 1932, created massive and unprecedented press for the company, and despite massive economic hardship, more than 5.5 million Americans lined up at dealer show rooms to see the new models.

Henry Ford's insistence on a low-priced V8, against the four and six-cylinder competition, was a stroke of engineering and marketing genius. The Flathead engine itself reliably powered most Ford cars and trucks until its replacement by an overhead valve V8 in 1954, but aesthetics were not ignored. Stylistically, the new models featured rounded corners, a slanted windscreen, and that iconic grille shell. Nearly 300,000 of these "baby Lincolns" were sold in 1932, and of the 14 models that comprised the 1932 Ford model lineup, the Roadster remains a favorite today, although only a small number survive in their original form.

A well-respected and knowledgeable collector of 1932 Fords currently owns this fine example, which continues to display an attractive older restoration and shows approximately 40,000 miles. A black beltline and fenders, tan pinstriping, very good brightwork, and a well-fitted soft top all complement its attractive blue body. Exterior accessories include cream-colored steel wire wheels with bright hubcaps, dual cowl-mounted lights, a driver's side rearview mirror, a rumble seat and a rear-mounted spare tire.

The interior has also been restored to period correct specifications, and reveals few signs of wear. Features include a woodgrain dash panel, attractive and well-fitted taupe leather upholstery and an instrument panel with an engine-turned finish. Underhood, the venerable flathead V8 engine, while not detailed, is period correct in presentation, with correct finishes and components throughout.

This dashing and well-preserved 1932 Ford Roadster represents a true landmark of automotive design and engineering. Its significance to the development of the modern automobile cannot be overestimated, and this very attractive example will surely enhance any fine collection of historic American automobiles.
