1951 Hudson Hornet Convertible | 1951 Hudson Hornet Convertible 99,000.00 USD 1951 Hudson Hornet Convertible RM Auctions Automobiles of Amelia Island Collector Car Auction Amelia Island, Florida March 13, 2009 AUCTION RESULTS: Lot 145 - Sold at a price of $99,000 Est. 180 hp, 308 cu. in. L-head inline six-cylinder engine with Twin H-Power dual carburetors and dual manifold induction system, dual Range Hydramatic automatic transmission, independent front suspension with rear leaf springs, four-wheel drum brakes. Wheelbase: 124" Hudsons have been credited with pioneering numerous important advances in automotive design, including the "step down" body style introduced in 1948 – now an industry standard. Claiming 10 of 11 stock car Grand Nationals in 1952 alone, "The Fabulous Hudson Hornet" was a powerful player in American racing through the mid-1950s, strongly contributing to its tremendous commercial success. One of only 500 produced in 1951, the lovely example offered here is painted burgundy with dark red leather interior and black power convertible top. It was acquired by the O'Quinn Collection in 2007. The previous owner purchased the car out of Oregon in about 1992. It was reported to be rust-free, straight and in good running condition at the time, but it required a body-off restoration, which was completed three years after. At that time the entire drivetrain, chassis, braking system, top mechanism, and all other mechanical components were refinished, remanufactured or replaced. Following its restoration, the car was housed in a climate controlled showroom, seeing relatively minor road use on a planned schedule so as to properly preserve all seals and drivetrain and chassis components. Over the ensuing 12 years, the car only accumulated 1,600 miles of dry weather driving. Since joining the O'Quinn Collection, it also has been driven on a limited basis as well. The addition of a high compression "262" cylinder head, larger than stock stainless steel valves, and a mild competition camshaft elevate power output to about 180 hp, compared to the respective 160 and 145 hp outputs of a regular Twin H Power and single carburetion setup. Equipped with full leather interior, quality carpeting, power windows and GM's Dual Range Hydramatic transmission, this Hornet is certainly a very well equipped example. Additional features include dual spotlights and power windows. This classic Twin H Power Convertible is one of the most desirable cars of the period and is worthy of close inspection, as the cost of duplicating such a restoration far exceeds the auction estimate. by Douglas |
