The early 1960s was a time of re-organizing for Ford Motor Company, and one of the cost-saving innovations was to have Mercury share the same basic body shell as the Ford. To pull this off successfully, Eugene Bordinat would have to come up with some pretty smart styling tricks so that the general public wouldn't realize the two cars were so closely related. His team's success was widely applauded, and the Mercury brand was considered a step-up car of the highest caliber. While the drivetrains were shared, V8 engines were standard in the Monterey series with the FE big-blocks being quite popular.
