Nissan History

The Kaishinsa Company, established in April, 1911, presented its first prototype vehicle, the DAT in 1912. Series production of the third-generation design began in 1914. The name of the company went through several changes and in June 1934, the Nissan Motor Company was founded.

Cars built from 1931 to 1932 carried the brand name of Datson. This was changed to Datsun in 1932, the name which continued to be used until 1983. The Nissan brand was also used, beginning in 1937. Beginning in 1984, all vehicles carried the Nissan brand.

Nissan Motors Company acquired several competitors during its growth including Jitsuyo Jidosha (1926), Minsei (1960), Prince (1966), and Cony (1967).

A relationship with Renault began in March 1999 when Renault purchased 36.8% of the Nissan company. This amount increased to 44.4% in 2002. Also in 2002, the Nissan company purchased 15% of the shares in Renault.

In 2003, Nissan entered into a partnership with the Dongfeng company in China, founding Dongfend Motor Company, Ltd. to produce Nissan passenger cars and Dongfend utility cars in China. Each concern owns 50% of the new company. Nissan has built cars in China since 1982 under the brands of Zhengzhou Nissan (1982-1996), Yunbao (1997-2000), Fengshen (2000-2002), and Nissan (2002 to Present).

Nissan currently operates plants in the Japan, USA, Great Britian, Spain, Mexico, Brazil, Taiwan (under the You Long/Yulon btands), Thailand, Malaysia, the Philippines, Indonesia, South Africa, Zimbabwe, China, Sudan, and Egypt. In addition, under the Nissan license, vehicles are built in Korea (Samsung brand), Iran (Pars Khodro-Nissan and Zamyad brands),

Production for 2003 at the plants in Japan totaled 1,245,028 passenger cars (Including Infiniti) and 100,686 pick-ups. World wide, the company produced 3,004,746 passenger and delivery vehicles utilizing facilities in 18 countries.
