Rick Mears' gallant attempt to pass Gordon Johncock during the final laps was to no avail as Gordy crossed the finish line a mere sixteen hundredths of a second ahead of Mears to win his second Indianapolis 500 Mile Race. The last American-built car to win the 500, this Patrick Wildcat was constructed at the Patrick Racing headquarters only eight blocks north of the track grounds.
