Plymouth Cars 1928 - 2001

The Chrysler Plymouth debuted in 1928, at Madison Square Garden, with Amelia Earhart behind the wheel. The Plymouth was billed as "A New Zenith of Low Priced Car-Luxury and Performance." Walter Chrysler, head of the Chrysler Corporation, wanted to challenge the sales leaders, Ford and Chevrolet. The car was named Plymouth - a symbol of "the endurance and strength, the rugged honesty, enterprise, and determination of achievement and freedom from old limitations of the Pilgrim band who were the first American colonists," at Plymouth Rock, MA.

The car was a classy product for the price of $670, and was the first "economy" car to offer such expensive-car features as 4-wheel hydraulic brakes, full-pressure engine lubrication, aluminum alloy pistons, and an independent hand brake. It came in 6 models, from coupe to touring car. From 1931 to 1954, Plymouth was third in auto sales which helped to save Chrysler in the 1930s.

The merger of the Chrysler Corporation and Daimler-Benz in 1998 would eventually result in the end of the Plymouth brand. DaimlerChrysler decided to drop the make after the reduced production of the 2001 models. The popular Plymouth PT Cruiser was rebadged under the Chrysler brand as was the Plymouth Voyager.
