With a base price of $1,758, the Pontiac Fastback was 24% more than the comparable Chevy Fleetline but for the extra money the purchaser had a 248.9 cubic-inch straight eight producing 106 horsepower. The Pontiac also featured a three-speed Hydramatic while the Chevrolet had the two-speed Powerglide.
The first new design after World War II, the 1949 Pontiacs had a 120" wheelbase. The front fenders became a free-flowing integral part of the body compared to the 1958 fat fenders. The roofline and beltline were lower than any previous Pontiac. While looking lighter, the 1949 models actually weighed a bit more than the 1948s.
The straight eight creates lots of low-end torque and a very smooth idle. Zero to sixty times were in the 15-second range which was considered pretty good by 1949 standards. The 1949 Pontiac has a top speed of about 90 mph.
