The Speedster was one of Porsche’s most successful models. Its light weight, excellent chassis and super balance were all placed within reach of aspiring Porsche owners thanks to a relatively low price. The price, however, also reflected the car’s spartan accommodations. The Speedster was noisy, its seats were uncomfortable and its flimsy folding top, side curtains, low windshield and ineffective heater made driving one in bad weather an experience endured only by necessity.
Porsche addressed these deficiencies in 1959 with the Convertible D, a second-generation, more driver-friendly Speedster. It was succeeded in 1960 by the Roadster in which the most significant change was the model name. The roof and windshield both were higher than the Speedster, adding 3 ½ inches of headroom – a small increment but a giant leap in comfort and visibility with the top up. Rollup windows replaced the Speedster’s side curtains. Additional changes included more complete interior trim and better seats, similar to those offered in the coupe.
