Graham Guest of Edinburgh Scotland. 8-SK came to the USA around the late 1950's. After being owned by only a handful of owners from 1934 through 1970's the car was purchased and restored by Neil Kirkham, a well known Rolls-Royce owner in California. He showed the car at numerous Concour events taking top honors at the likes of Silverado, Hillsbourgh, and Best of Show at the Art Deco Concours. It also took a first in class at the R-R Nationals. Wheelbase: 132" Rolls-Royce’s initial success could largely be credited to the commercial and marketing genius of Claude Johnson. Johnson established very early on in his career that Rolls-Royce was truly for one market only, the wealthy. His clever pitch attracted the elite aristocracy of the United Kingdom and Europe and the Silver Ghost, Rolls-Royce’s only model during this time, was a smashing success. Nevertheless, the changing automotive market forced Rolls-Royce to come up with a new strategy. In effect the solution had to combine the unmistakable and purely individual traits of a Rolls- Royce at a lower cost yet not sacrifice any of its quality. The answer was found in the Rolls-Royce 20hp model introduced in 1922. In keeping with Rolls-Royce tradition of a two-model policy, the 20/25hp was engineered to be the smaller sibling to Rolls-Royce’s larger Phantom II. Like all Rolls models, the 20/25hp was a careful, strategic evolution of the previous earlier model. With its more powerful 25hp (RAC rated) engine, this car offered all of the robust attributes of a Rolls-Royce with better acceleration and a higher top speed. In fact, the engine modifications had not only yielded better performance, it also yielded better overall fuel consumption versus the old model – an added bonus! Thanks to the increased engine output, various coachbuilders such as Thrupp and Maberly, Vanden Plas, Freestone and Webb, Park Ward, Brewster, Coachcraft, Gurney Nutting and others could offer more lavish coachwork without reducing performance. Almost 4,000 20/25hp chassis were manufactured and sold between 1929 and 1936, making it one of Rolls-Royce’s best selling contemporary models. The 25hp example featured here is fitted with a very attractive and stylish Sedanca Coupe body with coachwork by Gurney Nutting. Finished in a very light Dove gray with darker gray striping, it retains the original tastefully matched leather seats and tan wool carpets. This 25hp Rolls-Royce is the recipient of a body-on cosmetic restoration having received new paint and updated brightwork some time ago. We understand that the Rolls-Royce has been well cared for, maintained regularly, and is in proper running order. The odometer reads 15,826 original miles, which is believed to be correct from new. Additionally, the engine looks to be untouched and includes an array of original tools. As a right hand drive model, it has resided much of its life in London, England; however, early title documents show the Rolls-Royce was registered in Washington State as early as 1978. The Rolls-Royce is complete with a rear mounted spare, Lucas headlights and a Lucas center driving light, dual spotlights, and painted disk wheels. Though an older restoration, the paint, wood and brightwork have held up presentably, leaving the new owner the choice of restoration or enjoyment as it is presented. A handsome and elegant example, this lovely Sedanca Coupe, with its two position top, is a wonderful and reasonably priced alternative to the expensive Phantom models and is worthy of close inspection. by Douglas |
