The Shelby mystique was further enhanced half way through the 1968 model year as Shelby American pulled off one of the major coups of the muscle car marketing era. Receiving word through several covert intelligence operatives that the 'bow tie gang' were building the ultimate Camaro (later dubbed the ZL1) and were planning to call it "The King of the Road". Acting quickly as the small band of guerilla operatives that made up the Shelby American marketing team in 1968, plans were quickly drawn to introduce the new upgraded Shelby GT500 and add the KR designation to denote the mighty 428 Cobra Jet powerplant.

To this day, one of the most awesome horsepower combinations to exit the Ford Motor Company, the 428 Cobra Jet equipped GT500KRs are the most highly coveted models from Shelby American.
